Benefits of rhymes

The importance of songs and rhymes for babies and children

Building language skills is central to rhyme times. The songs and rhymes are rhythmic and the language is often repetitive which makes it easier for babies and small children to acquire language skills. Actions accompanying the rhymes help children identify words more easily e.g. ‘clap your hands’.

Rhymes are free and portable and don’t require special equipment! You can sing with your baby or toddler in many every day situations such as nappy changing; bath time or preparing a meal. Some rhymes can be adapted to include the baby’s name or favourite toy e.g. “Round and round the garden like a teddy bear….one step, two steps, tickle ‘baby’s name’ under there!” Songs and rhymes can be lively when baby is ready for play and softer and quieter as baby becomes tired.

Babies can learn from the adult’s facial expression e.g. the word ‘smile’ said with a smile! They can also learn to imitate the movements of the mouth to make the sounds of the words.

Rhymes can be used by all members of the family with older siblings singing and rhyming with their baby brother/sister. Rhymes and songs can be developed as the babies get older to include more movement and actions.

Rhymes and songs are simple ways of communicating with your baby. Sharing time singing and rhyming is a loving way to bond and have fun together.

They are a fun, free way of helping your baby acquire language skills and are great building blocks for your baby’s future learning!

Above all – have fun!!
