This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of Derbyshire’s Books for Babies, a project that uses the Bookstart baby pack to develop literacy skills in very young children and encourage awareness of the importance of literacy for all members of these families.
The study examines the response of families to the programme in one particular area, Staveley, an impoverished community of North East Derbyshire. Families involved in the project demonstrated increased awareness of early exposure to books and a willingness to read with their children at a younger age than would have occurred othewise. The programme also led to increased use of local libraries by young children and their families.
